As a rule, people do not like making mistakes. But without them, we can not understand what we should do and what we shouldn’t. That’s curious that smart people make mistakes more often than others, sometimes sending themselves to a long and challenging path to truth. 1. Ignoring sleep
To dedicate all your time to a new task can be useful. But in case it translates into an obsession which prevents you from sleeping, it’s time to change something. You have probably noticed how differently you feel when the day before you went to bed at 2 am and at 11 pm, even if you had been sleeping for 8 hours. In the first case, you certainly get up with a feeling of weariness, in the second case, you feel awake and rested.
Take your sleep seriously. Try to wake up every morning at the same time, turn off all electronic devices an hour before you go to bed. Get rid of the habit of working or somehow loading your intellect at bedtime, better read something unobtrusive or write a few lines in a diary.
2. Always staying in touch
Thanks to modern technologies, almost everybody has got a smartphone with access to the Internet. It will take quite a bit of time, and the whole world will be in touch around-the-clock, even people from the less developed countries. There is no doubt that technologies have changed the world considerably, but some riches can cause harm.
So, according to current research, people born after 1995 are anxious and under high stress. The American Psychological Association (APA) even claims that the mental health of this generation is worse than the rest. Among the most possible reasons – almost constant general availability for calls and messages. That’s why it is easy to conclude how important it is to restrict the use of mobile devices.
3. Going after money
Paradoxically but the largest magazine publisher in the UK, Felix Dennis, in his book “How to Get Rich,” urges not to go after money. And many wealthy people will advise you the same thing. It’s funny: we all know that there are much more essential things in life than money, but often getting money becomes our prime goal. There is nothing wrong with getting rich. It is only necessary to remember that income above a certain level has little effect on your happiness and that money is not able to solve all the problems.
4. Refusing to do physical exercises
Our life is full of duties and events, including unforeseen ones. We work a lot, try to spend time with family and friends. Sometimes there are crises at work, and family members are sick. And when this happens, it seems to us the easiest way is to strict sport from the list of priorities.
After some time without training, you begin to feel tired and weak. Any physical activity trouble us. The vicious circle closes, you refuse to study and sheer away from mirrors … Do not let yourself to get into it. Arrange training three times a week and be sure to walk on other days.
5. Being too self-assured
Self-confidence is a trap that smart people often fall into. Indeed, when you are good at something, it is easy to overestimate yourself. A self-confident person may consider that he:
- is better than he or she actually is;
- is better than others;
- knows the truth.
Let’s be honest, everyone thinks that way at least once in their life. Probably, the reason lies in the fact that having achieved even a small success, a lot of people stop asking themselves questions, and therefore learn. Therefore, keep it a rule to rely on what led you to success: curiosity, dedication and hard work.

6. Solving several tasks simultaneously
Smart people think quickly and are therefore impatient. They like to do several things at the same time, feeling that they are extremely productive. However, it is not so. Multitasking not only makes us less productive: people who constantly spread oneself too thin, in fact, lose out to those who prefer to devote themselves entirely to one issue in a certain period of time.
If you have an opinion, the brain tends to defend it, even if the facts speak against it. For example, if you are convinced that customers like the new product, then you will pay attention to positive reviews, and write off negative ones as an accident. Avoiding this is easy. Form your own opinion only after viewing all the information.
8. Avoiding losses
People usually try to avoid losses, not earn. After all, it is considered that a defeat is twice as expensive as a victory. This phenomenon was described by Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman. For example, you do not go to a work event (boring, not obligatory, and you have to spend a lot of time). But there is an opportunity to meet a new partner who has the potential to bring you something more. Often the things that we can lose is not as valuable as we used to think. It is possible to recover from losses, but usually, it is not possible to return the chance wasted.
9. Giving a hostile feedback reception
Smart people do not trust the opinions of others. They find it hard to believe that there are professionals who can give them an adequate assessment. This is not only not encourage achieving high performance, but can also lead to toxic relationships at work and in personal life. Therefore, they should develop emotional intelligence.
10. Being not persistent
When everything comes naturally and easy to you, difficulties are perceived as something negative, as a sign that you are not suitable for this task. When an intelligent person realizes that he has to do a lot of hard work, he often feels lost and confused.
As a result, he prefers to do something else to confirm the feeling of his own valuableness. While perseverance and work, perhaps, after some time, would bring him success in those areas that were not initially his scope of activity.
Having a good brain is pleasant and profitable: according to statistics, smart people earn more and even live longer. However, the expression “too smart for your own good” also holds a mirror up to reality.
